Meet the 2018-19 cohort of the LEAP Fellowship, created by CLAL and the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania to bring together rabbis and a group of the world’s leading scholars of Judaic studies, whose knowledge of and research on Jewish civilization has the potential to enhance Jewish life and shape Jewish culture beyond academic borders. The responsibility of translating this knowledge and research into accessible, meaningful and usable wisdom for the Jewish community falls to the rabbis.
The focus this year's fellowship will be the study of Jews in modern Islamic contexts. We will examine scholarship on Jewish life, culture and thought as these have developed in modern times across North Africa, the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, and Central and South Asia.
